Frequently Asked Questions

What are shingles?

Shingles affect people who have previously had chicken pox. When you have the herpes-zoster virus in your body, it remains there. If it becomes active again in later life, the virus causes a very painful rash.

The shingles vaccine is recommended for people over 50, as shingles are most common for people in this age group. You may be vulnerable to shingles if you have a weakened immune system, are ill, or are under significant stress. The shingles vaccine is also suitable for people aged over 18 years with underlying medical issues that put them at increased risk of shingles.

Two doses of the vaccine provide strong protection against shingles and postherpetic neuralgia, also known as nerve pain, the most common complication of shingles. In adults 50 to 69 years old with healthy immune systems, Shingrix was 97% effective in preventing shingles; in adults 70 years and older, Shingrix was 91% effective.

No prescription is needed, a consultation with one of our pharmacists we can provide the vaccine here in the pharmacy without the need for you to visit your GP or obtain a prescription.
