Description

A controlled-release system in the tablet allows release of the iron over a number of hours and reduces the likelihood of stomach irritation. The controlled-release system consists of a harmless plastic honeycomb with thousands of narrow passages containing iron.

As the tablet passes through the stomach and gut the iron is released and the empty honeycomb is passed out in the stools. Ferrograd is an iron supplement that can be more gentle on the stomach than other forms of iron supplement.

Each tablet combines 325mg of ferrous sulphate with 0.35mg of folic acid, providing a balanced and sustained absorption throughout the day. Clinical trial data indicates up to 95% absorption of iron from this formulation.

Ferrograd contains 325mg Ferrous Sulphate in a prolonged release formulation, which provides a more balanced absorption in the body over the day. Ferrograd tablets can be used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anaemia.

How to use:

For oral administration only. Each tablet must be swallowed whole. Recommended adult dose: One tablet daily before food or as directed by the physician. Do not exceed the stated dose. Not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

HAZARDS & CAUTIONS

• Contains iron. Keep out of reach and sight of children, as overdose may be fatal.
• Caution is advised in individuals with a family history of haemochromatosis or iron overload syndromes. It should be noted these conditions may be under diagnosed. Overdose may be fatal. As with all iron preparations, this product should be used with caution in patients with haemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia or haemoglobinopathies.
• The sustained release tablet and its inert plastic matrix may cause a safety hazard in patients suffering from delayed intestinal transit. There may also be a further delay in release of the iron.
• Ferrograd Folic contains the colour E124, which may cause allergic type reactions including asthma. Allergy is more common in those people who are allergic to aspirin.
• Due to the risk of mouth ulcerations and tooth discolouration, tablets should not be sucked, chewed or kept in the mouth, but swallowed whole with water.
• Aspiration of iron sulphate tablets can cause necrosis of the bronchial mucosa which may result in coughing, haemoptysis, broncho stenosis and/or pulmonary infection (even if aspiration happened days to months before these symptoms occurred).
• Elderly patients and patients who have difficulties swallowing should only be treated with iron sulphate tablets after a careful evaluation of the individual patient’s risk of aspiration.
• Alternative formulations should be considered. Patients should seek medical attention in case of suspected aspiration.
